Is Social Business Working Out? (Page 97)

1.Identity the management, organization, and technology factors responsibilible for impeding adoption of internal corporate social networks.

Management factor:

When considering the management factor, the following reasons are responsible for impeding adoption of internal corporate social networks :
(1)The employees, who are used to collaborating and performing business on more traditional ways, required a motivation to use social software.
(2)The most organizations are not ready to provide the motivation to the employees.
(3)As per the strategy, only 22 percent of users, who are using social software trust that the technology has been significant for jobs 4.Many organizations are thinking that the social networks decrease the work efficiency of employees, and it never helps for an organization development.

Organization factor:

When considering the organization factor, the following reasons are responsible for impeding adoption of internal corporate social networks:
(1)The organizations, which are tried to install internal social networks, have found that the process of overcoming the inactivity of the organization by certain way of business is very difficult.
(2)Because of different surveys, many organizations think that the enterprise social networking system do not help to collaborate the companies.
(3)Many surveys reveals that the internal social networks does not have more impact on retention of an employee, rapidity of decision making, or the drop of meetings.

Technology factor:

When considering the technology factor, the following reasons are responsible for impeding adoption of internal corporate social networks :
(1)In adoption of social networking technology, the advantages like easy to use and increased efficiency of job are more important than peer pressure.
(2)Most of the IT professionals are considering their internal social networks as average or below average, because the social networks are having low adoption rates.
(3)The contents available on the networks are required to be significant, up-to-date, and simple to access.
(4)Users of the network should be able to connect with the people, who are having corresponding information they need. Otherwise, it is hard to reach employees.

2.Compare the experiences for implementing internal social networks of the two organizations. Why was one more successful than the other?  What role did management play in this process?

  •      NASAs Goddard Space Flight Center implemented a custom-built enterprise social network called Spacebook to help the small teams join forces with larger groups without using email. The Spacebook social network included user profiles, groups, group workspaces like file sharing, wikis, and discussion forums. The reason Spacebook failed was because it wasnt people-focused and didnt consider the organizations culture and politics into its design.  The question remained was:  how did Spacebook help the users do their jobs?
  •       The Red Robin hamburger restaurant chain took an open approach by inviting its employees to use the social networking system. In turn, these employees invited other employees to use the Microsoft Yammer social network. The companys CIO saw a movement away from e-mail and collaboration portals such as SharePoint toward social networking and texting. He wanted to let people create conversations, perform status updates, upload and share files, and set up workgroups for small project teams.

Function

Help small teams collaborate without emailing larger groups

Give front-line employees a greater voice in the company where immediate feedback and rapid modification can be made

Performance/Result

Failed. Very few users adopted. Failing factor due to not focusing enough on people, organization’s culture and politics. Nobody in the company understand how Spacebook can help them as comparing to traditional e-mail method

Success with instant feedback helps to engage workers and increase loyalty. Besides that, Yammer is adopted by employees through the invitation of satisfied user from the company.

3.Should all companies implement internal enterprise social networks? Why or why not?

Yes,In my opinion, I think all companies should implement internal enterprise social networks. Internal social network is actually a very useful tool for the companies to reduce expenses, time and improve productivity. People in the company can simply share documents and information online and communicate via this platform, and this help to save time and as well energy compared to the traditional way which is to deliver the hardcopy of the document manually and using phone call which will cost money. Companies should provide incentives to encourage the employee to adopt the new system. I believe that if the employees are clear of what benefits they will receive with the new system, they would be more willing to accept the changes.
